On the 27th a combined ABDA – American British Dutch Australian – task force of ships had sustained heavy damage whilst attacking the Japanese invasion fleet heading for Java, now known as the First Battle of the Java Sea. Full title reads: "Exeter Welcomes Men of HMS Exeter".Exeter, Devon.VS of Inspection of Men of HMS Exeter by Lord Mayor and Captain Bell.VS of the crew of HM HMS Exeter osallistui saksalaisen taskutaistelulaivan Admiral Graf Speen upottamista edeltäneeseen taisteluun La Plata -joen suulla 13. joulukuuta 1939.
